In short: choose a showcase website if your goal is to be found, present your business and receive enquiries. Choose a web application if people need to work with data: accounts, file tracking, bookings, payments, dashboards. Many businesses need both, but rarely at the same time.

The two are easy to confuse, because both open in a browser and can look alike. Yet they meet different needs, are built differently and do not cost the same. Here is how to decide for your business.

The difference in one sentence

A showcase website informs: it says who you are, what you do and how to reach you. A web application does work: each user signs in, enters or views information of their own, and the system applies your business rules.

When a showcase website is enough

A showcase website is the right choice if most of these describe you:

  • Customers look you up on Google or Google Maps before calling.
  • Sales close by phone, on WhatsApp or in a meeting, not online.
  • You want to show your services, past work, indicative prices or opening hours.
  • Customers do not need an account or to track anything.
  • You want to edit a few texts and photos yourself.

That covers most firms, restaurants, tradespeople, travel agencies, clinics and service companies. For them, what matters is clarity, mobile speed and local SEO, not technology.

When you need a web application

A web application becomes useful once you manage data that changes and people who act on it. Some signs:

  • You track customers, orders, rents or cases in several Excel files that contradict each other.
  • Customers keep asking “where is my file?”.
  • Several people (staff, partners, customers) need different information depending on their role.
  • You want to offer booking, online quotes, a client area or payment.
  • You lose time on repetitive tasks: reminders, receipts, monthly reports.

In these cases, adding pages to a showcase site solves nothing. The problem is not presentation, it is how the work is organised.

Budgets: very different orders of magnitude

Prices vary widely by provider and scope. The figures below are ranges published by Moroccan agencies. Treat them as orders of magnitude, not reference prices.

ProjectPublished range
Professional showcase site (agency, 5–10 pages)8,000 to 18,000 MAD
Custom module or integrationfrom 30,000 MAD excl. VAT
First version of an app (MVP)35,000 to 60,000 MAD excl. VAT
Complete application (V1)60,000 to 120,000 MAD excl. VAT
Custom business application, depending on scope150,000 to 600,000 MAD excl. VAT

Sources: Nooralto, IT Labs Pro, WebSuccess and Kolonell (checked October 2026). The gaps between sources are large: they mostly reflect the difference between a small single-purpose app and a platform with many roles and integrations. For website prices in detail, see How much does a website cost in Tangier in 2026?

Plan for costs after delivery too. An application needs hosting with a database, backups, security updates and new features. One of the sources above puts application maintenance at 12 to 15% of the build cost per year: a figure to check in every quote.

The most common mistakes

Building an app when a website is enough

A client area nobody uses, a booking system for three appointments a week: these features are expensive to build and maintain. If a form and a WhatsApp button do the job, start there.

Turning a showcase site into an app with plugins

The reverse also happens. Stacking plugins on a showcase site to handle accounts, payments and documents often gives something slow, fragile and hard to secure. When the need really is an application, treat it as one.

Wanting everything at once

An application works best when it starts small: one process, the essential features, a few users. You then extend it based on real use, instead of guessing every case in advance.

Forgetting personal data

As soon as you collect customer data (names, phone numbers, ID documents), Moroccan Law 09-08 on personal data protection applies, overseen by the CNDP. Decide who can see what, where the data is hosted and how it is deleted.

The most common combination

In practice, many businesses end up with both: a public showcase site, fast and well ranked, that brings in enquiries, and a private application that handles the work behind it. Both can share the same branding and domain, for example yoursite.ma for the public and app.yoursite.ma for the signed-in area.

A sensible order: launch the showcase site first to be visible, see which tasks cost you the most time, then build the application around that specific process.

Three questions to decide

  1. Do visitors need to sign in? If not, a showcase site is probably enough.
  2. Does the content change depending on the person? If so, you are talking about an application.
  3. Is your main problem being found, or getting organised? Being found is a website. Getting organised is an application.
